Thank you for your interest in applying for the Spirit of Laredo Scholarship Competition. The purpose of this scholarship competition, established in 2019 by the Education Committee of the Laredo Chamber of Commerce, is to provide financial opportunities for interested graduating students while also instilling a sense of community pride in young adults. The competition recognizes graduates’ creativity and academic achievement.
Winners of the contest will receive scholarships as follows:
1st PLACE $2,000
2nd PLACE $1,000
3rd PLACE $500
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be scheduled to graduate from a local high school this year (2024). Must be able to show proof of college application if requested.
COMPETITION RULES: Participants must submit a 120-second (or less) video addressing all 3 topics listed below.
What inspires you to pursue a college education and how will you apply that to make Laredo a better place?
What would you like Laredo to be known for and how does the Laredo Chamber of Commerce play a role in Laredo’s economic development?
Given that many students leave Laredo after graduation, what would it take for you and other future college graduates to build your future in Laredo versus somewhere else?
Video must be compatible with Windows or MAC for viewing. Recommended MP4 format. If the video is more than 2 minutes long, your submission will be disqualifie.
JUDGING CRITERIA: The following criteria will be taken into account in judging contest submissions:
Adherence to theme – Is the message in line with the prompts listed in the contest rules?
Originality – Make sure your message is personal. Be original.
Clarity of Message – How well is the topic developed/presented.
Creativity – Applicants are encouraged to use their imagination in presenting their case.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Education Committee members will evaluate all entries received. The videos will be evaluated and scored, and the top three scoring applicants will be selected as the winners of first, second, and thir place, respectively.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING ENTRIES: In Person or by Mail – Video can be submitted in person or mailed to the Laredo Chamber of Commerce, 5702 McPherson Rd. Suite 8B, Laredo, TX 78041. Must be submitte in a USB/zip drive accompanied by an official competition registration form. (Laredo Chamber is not responsible for returning zip drives).

WINNERS NOTIFICATION: Competition winners will be notifie during the month of April 2024. The scholarships will be awarded at a Breakfast ceremony. Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the applicant.

1)Dreaming Big for Laredo: If you could wave a magic wand, what would you immediately change about Laredo? And what would you keep the same?
2)What Moment Changed You: We encounter lessons, setbacks, and challenges every day. Share a moment or experience that changed you as a person. What did you learn about yourself? How did you change? What insights did you learn and how did that reframe your perspective?
3)Laredo 2050: Imagine you had the opportunity to speak to city leaders and business owners. What could Laredo become? What is your vision for Laredo in 2050?
The Education Committee of the Laredo Chamber of Commerce Foundation is sponsoring the competition with matching funds from Killam Development, which will be presented at a ceremony at the Laredo Country Club.
